چکیده

The results of a series of experiments are presented which demonstrate that the absorption of UV-C light by DNA at temperatures below the melting temperature leads to complete and reversible denaturing for small synthetic DNA of 25 base pairs (bp), and to partial and reversible denaturing for the 48 bp DNA and for the large salmon sperm and yeast DNA of average size 100 kbp. This result supports the thermodynamic dissipation theory of the origin of life in which non-enzymatic replication and the coupling of replication to dissipation are two important aspects. It also supports corollaries of this theory which provide an explanation for the homochirality of the molecules of life and for the beginnings of information accumulation in RNA and DNA through the thermodynamically driven process of photon dissipation.

DNA Denaturing through Photon Dissipation: A Possible Route to Archean Non-enzymatic Replication

Formidable difficulties arise when attempting to explain the non-enzymatic replication, proliferation, and the acquisition of homochirality and information content, of RNA and DNA at the beginnings of life. However, new light can be shed on these problems by viewing the origin of life as a non-equilibrium thermodynamic process in which RNA, DNA and other fundamental molecules of life arose as s...

Microscopic dissipative structuring and proliferation at the origin of life

Some fundamental molecules of life are suggested to have been formed, proliferated, and evolved through photochemical microscopic dissipative structuring and autocatalytic proliferation under the UV-C/UV-B solar environment prevalent at Earth's surface throughout the Archean. Evidence is given in the numerous salient characteristics of these, including their strong absorption in this spectral r...

Ultraviolet Light Induced Mutation and Deoxyribonucleic Acid Replication in Bacteria.

HE terminal process through which the genetic change induced by ultraviolet Tlight (UV) is incorporated into the genetic apparatus is the initial postirradiation deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication ( HAAS and DOUDNEY 1959; DOUDNEY and HAAS 1960). It has been suggested that two discrete radiation effects are prerequisite to incorporation of the “potential mutation” into DNA ( DOUDNEY, KADA a...

Thermodynamic origin of life

Understanding the thermodynamic function of life may shed light on its origin. Life, as are all irreversible processes, is contingent on entropy production. Entropy production is a measure of the rate of the tendency of Nature to explore available microstates. The most important irreversible process generating entropy in the biosphere and, thus, facilitating this exploration, is the absorption ...
